Endmoor Kendal Cumbria – Balcony Project

Endmoor, Kendal, Cumbria was a refurbishment project, of a modern styled property.

We concluded that the perimeter balcony and canopy details needed some improvement. This project was led by O’Neill architects to ensure the client was satisfied with the design and finished product . We liaised with the client & architect throughout the project. The Existing roof design was a GRP finish with a nonslip tile, embedded onto the roof surface. At the time of survey on this project the existing roof was only four years old . We identified numerous areas of failure and poor detailing to the perimeter edges. The architect specified removal and a redesign.

The Ceramic tiles had become loose and useless. Areas of the timber decking beneath the tiles had become spongy indicating signs of leakage. The building has extremely low door thresholds and a seamless window design which made product choice and suitability more tricky. Working alongside Westwood liquids we decided to use their PMMA cold applied rapid curing system. PMMA provides extreme versatility when it comes to bonding to various materials (metal ,pvc ) . Furthermore, it was selected for the use of their robust balcony system with numerous aesthetically pleasing finishes.

We made a start by stripping the existing ceramic tiles from the roof. This would expose any damage from ponding water caused by the previous bad design. Following our assessment we were able to redesign the balconies. We implemented a tissue face tapered insulation board to ensure guaranteed, removal of any ponding. Our next task was to fit a screed which removed dips in the underlying concrete. Once the concrete had fully cured we applied the ‘We-plus vapour barrier’, fully bonded, to the concrete screed.

The perimeter canopy details were formed from timber so these required new Timber falls and 18mm plywood deck. We fitted the balcony areas with a tapered insulation. Next, an additional cement board was bonded to the top side of the insulation. This creates a robust and hard wearing balcony finish. The roof was now ready to be waterproofed with the Westwood wecryl system. Lastly we added the finish to the balconies in anthracite grey as chosen by the client. This design comes with a decorative chip, which creates a non-slip finish.

PMMA cold applied rapid curing system comes in a wide range of finishes, including: tile effect and plank affect. We recommend PMMA for its durability and seamless finish. Furthermore the results are aesthetically pleasing.
