NatWest – Windermere, Cumbria – Burlington Slate
We carried out a full roof overhaul of the NatWest branch in the picturesque village of Windermere, situated in Cumbria’s lake district national park and conservation area.
The Main focus of the works was to fully replace the roof coverings, and all the current leadwork. We prepared to install the the new lead to the current standard’s. We identified a problem with the original cast iron gutters and downspouts. These were rusted and no longer fit for purpose. At Blackpool Industrial Windows workshop we refurbished the ornate hoppers with new, matching, cast iron. We produced excellent results as you can see in the image gallery.
The building has three large chimneys, which were all given a new lease of life. We had to completely rebuild one of the chimneys, while the other two required patching, rendering and painting. We installed lead cavity trays in the new rebuilt chimney. We then rendered and painted it to match its original state.
As we removed the existing slates we began to expose a common problem across old buildings. The timbers had begun to rot throughout the roof structure, in particular the timber frame Dormers. Conservation was at the forefront of our decisions on this traditional building. So with that in mind we were able to team with our experts craftsmen to fully renew and replicate the dormer structure and details.
Once all the repair works to the structure were complete we began to re-cover the roof. We installed a traditional ‘Lakeland’ style roof, laying new Burlington slate. The slate was sourced from the local Quarry. We laid the slate in diminishing courses and random widths, again, in true ‘Lakeland’ style. Only a perfect finish is acceptable at Blackpool Industrial Roofing. We finished by refurbishing and cleaning the existing stone ridge tiles. This perfectly restored the property back to its former glory.
